Voltage regulation enquiry checklist
The load, supply, site and responsibility information to gather before enquiring about a voltage stabilizer, voltage controller or servo controller.
Load
- Connected load in kVA, or in kW with the power factor if known
- Load that runs at the same time during the busiest period
- Largest motor, compressor or lift, its rating and starting method
- Electronic loads such as drives, UPS systems and LED lighting, listed separately
- Loads that must be regulated and loads that can stay on the unregulated supply
- Expected load growth over the next few years
Supply
- Lowest and highest incoming voltage recorded, with dates and times
- Single-phase or three-phase supply, and phase-to-phase readings for three-phase sites
- Phase currents, to show whether the load is balanced
- Generator or inverter backup on the same load, and the changeover method
Site
- Proposed location and its dimensions, with photographs taken with permission
- Ventilation route and the highest ambient temperature expected
- Access for delivery and for maintenance on all serviceable sides
- Cable entry direction and approximate cable lengths to the board and the load
- Any limit on noise near the equipment
For servo controllers
- Host stabilizer rating and phase arrangement
- Servo motor type and supply, and the sensing arrangement
- Mounting space and connections inside the host enclosure
Responsibilities
- Who installs, terminates and commissions the equipment
- Who operates and maintains it after handover
- Documents required at handover
Gather what you can; an enquiry does not need every item. The review records what is missing, states what it assumes, and asks for the facts that would change the proposal. Measured values are more useful than estimates, and estimates should be marked as such.
