Transformers & Power Distribution
Transformer enquiry checklist
The electrical, installation and documentation information to gather before enquiring about a power or distribution transformer.
Electrical duty
- Rating in kVA, or the maximum demand and expected growth from which it is derived
- Primary system voltage and the supply authority's requirements
- Secondary voltage and neutral arrangement
- Vector group, and details of any transformer it must run in parallel with
- Tapping requirement: off-circuit or on-load, and the range
- Harmonic-producing or heavily cyclic loads, and their share of the total
Specification
- The project or utility specification, with its revision
- Required efficiency level or loss limits
- Any standard the specification cites
Installation
- Indoor or outdoor installation, and the plinth or mounting arrangement
- Delivery route, lifting arrangements and clearances around the tank
- Termination on each side: cable box, bushings or busduct, with cable sizes
- Fittings and indications required, and who supplies the protection they connect to
Verification and documents
- Tests the specification requires and whether any are witnessed
- Drawings and documents to be approved before manufacture
- Documents required at dispatch and at handover
Responsibilities
- Who unloads, positions, fills or tops up, and connects the transformer
- Who arranges the supply authority's inspection, where required
Where a full specification exists, say so in the enquiry and it will be requested when the review begins; the checklist then helps confirm that nothing outside the specification has been missed, such as the delivery route or the scope of termination.
The transformer selection guide explains each decision. Send the information through the enquiry form.
