Standard and custom power supplies compared
When a standard CC/CV power-supply configuration fits an OEM product and when a custom design is justified, compared on fit, validation, change control and volume.
| Criterion | Standard CC/CV configuration | Custom power supply |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | An existing design and specification | The OEM's electrical, mechanical and thermal requirement |
| Electrical fit | Within the existing output and input ranges | Outputs, interfaces and protections set for the product |
| Mechanical fit | Existing enclosed, open-frame or DIN-rail format | Form, mounting and connectors set for the product |
| Development stages | Sample, OEM validation, production | Requirements, feasibility, prototype, validation, pilot, production |
| Validation effort | OEM validates in its own product | Supplier and OEM validation of a new design |
| Change control | Shared design; changes notified under the agreed policy | Design tied to the OEM's product; changes agreed with the OEM |
| Volume consideration | Suits low to moderate volumes | Justified when volume or fit requirements warrant it |
Both routes sit within the CC/CV & Custom Power Supplies class, typically 10–600 W. The right route depends on how closely an existing configuration meets the requirement and on the volumes and lifecycle expected.
